Our Karma points extension and customer service experience
How a points expiry question led to a written one year extension

AI-generated conceptual illustration of time, communication and travel points. It does not depict an actual service interaction, account screen or Karma property.
Our recent Karma customer-service exchange ended with a worthwhile result: written approval to extend 165 bonus points from the end of December 2026 to the end of December 2027. Georgina obtained the one-time exception in about 19 hours after our direct October request.
The route to that answer was less straightforward. An earlier reply was friendly and reasonably quick, but it did not settle the question that mattered: could we book before the points expired and take the trip afterward? A later exchange finally made the distinction clear.
Our assessment is mixed but ultimately positive about the resolution. Paul responded promptly in July, although the answer was incomplete on expiry. Georgina later explained the rule precisely and secured a concrete exception. The timings below describe this one exchange, not a general measure of Karma service.
A quick July reply left the main question open
We asked about an extension on July 18, 2026. Paul replied the following day, about 26 hours and 44 minutes later. He described a balance of 545 points and said reservations could be made up to a year in advance.
That was useful booking information, but it did not explicitly approve an extension or answer whether checkout could fall after the points expired. Advance booking and a later permitted stay are different questions. We could not safely treat the reply as permission to use expiring points for travel beyond their deadline.
October brought a precise answer
On October 6 we asked for explicit written clarification, then followed up on October 10. Georgina replied on October 12. Her answer arrived about six days, five hours and 40 minutes after the October 6 request, or two days and eight hours after the follow-up.
Her clarification was specific: checkout had to occur no later than the points’ expiry date. Making a reservation before expiry would not, by itself, preserve those points for a later stay. That finally answered the practical question we needed resolved.
Exchange in 2026 | Calendar time to reply |
July 18 extension request → July 19 reply | 26 hours 44 minutes |
October 6 clarification request → October 12 answer | 6 days 5 hours 40 minutes |
October 10 follow-up → October 12 answer | 2 days 8 hours 28 minutes |
October 12 direct exception request → October 13 approval | 19 hours 12 minutes |
Intervals are calculated from original sent-message timestamps, normalized to Eastern Daylight Time, and rounded to the nearest minute. They are elapsed calendar time, including weekends, not business-hour measurements. The two October clarification rows measure the same reply from different starting points.
The exception Georgina secured
After that clarification, we made a direct request on October 12 for a one-time extension. On October 13, Georgina confirmed management approval to extend the 165 bonus points due to expire at the end of December 2026 through the end of December 2027.
That written approval extended the stated deadline by a year. It was a specific exception for a particular allocation, not a new rule for all points or a promise that other members would receive the same treatment. The approval also did not establish availability for any chosen resort or trip.
The points snapshot behind the request
In the October 12 correspondence, before the exception was approved, Karma described a total of 710 points across the following expiry years. This is a dated statement from the exchange, not a live account balance.
Expiry stated on October 12 | Points |
End of 2026 | 165 |
End of 2027 | 330 |
End of 2028 | 50 |
End of 2029 | 165 |
Total stated in that correspondence | 710 |
The following day’s approval applied to the 165 bonus points in the first row. We are reporting the written approval, rather than claiming that a fresh account check or completed redemption has independently verified every balance and expiry shown here.
Our assessment of the service
Paul deserves credit for a reply in just over a day. The weakness was completeness: the answer did not settle the expiry issue. We would not characterize the later gap between July and October as continuous silence from the company; the record contains separate requests and replies.
Georgina’s contribution was more useful to the problem at hand. She explained the rule in terms we could plan around and then obtained the exception in under 24 hours after the direct request. The earlier October clarification took several calendar days and a follow-up, so the experience was not uniformly fast.
The lesson for our membership project is to judge both the reply and the result. Here, the result merits credit: a clear answer and a documented one-year extension. The next test is whether those points translate into a suitable, available booking. This exchange alone cannot establish the overall value of the membership.
