San Francisco and Oahu in five nights: our May 2025 route

Our May 2025 trip combined two nights in San Francisco with three nights on Oahu. We left New York on May 21, continued from San Francisco to Honolulu on May 23, and returned through San Francisco on May 26 before reaching New York on May 27.

Based on our May 2025 trip records, this is a route account, not a full budget or hotel review. Five nights at our destinations occupied a May 21–27 travel window, an important distinction when planning a short two-destination trip.

May 2025 itinerary: San Francisco May 21–23, two nights; Oahu May 23–26, three nights; return via San Francisco May 26–27, reaching New York May 27.

Our May 2025 itinerary. This timeline shows the travel sequence, not geographic distance.

May 21 to 23 in San Francisco

We flew from New York's JFK to San Francisco and transferred from SFO to our Airbnb on May 21.

San Francisco was a two-night stop rather than just an airport connection. We stayed on May 21 and May 22, with May 22 as the full day between the arrival and onward-flight days. On May 23, we returned to SFO for the flight to Honolulu.

The May 21 transfer route connected Golden Gate Park, the Legion of Honor, the Golden Gate Bridge welcome center and Pier 39 before returning to our stay. These are recorded ride endpoints, not confirmation of admission to every venue or a walk across the bridge. They describe a day linked by rides rather than a continuous walking itinerary.

May 22 began with a ride to Mama's on Washington Square. A later transfer connected the Exploratorium and the Painted Ladies. Neither day's record gives us reliable sightseeing durations, but the separate transfers are worth noticing if you are building your own route.

When planning from this example, put the stops you want on a map and check the journeys between them. Do not assume that places included on the same day in somebody else's trip can all be comfortably covered on foot. Compare the transfer time as well as the time you hope to spend at each stop.

For anyone comparing a similar route, keep those travel days separate from the full day in the city. Two nights in a destination should not be treated as two complete sightseeing days. Check the actual flight times and transfers before deciding how much to fit around them.

May 23 to 26 on Oahu

On May 23, we flew from San Francisco to Honolulu and transferred to Aqua Palms Hotel, where we had booked through Airbnb.

That was our Oahu base for three nights, from May 23 to May 26. The overnight split left May 24 and May 25 between our island arrival and departure days.

For planning purposes, that gives you two days without a flight between destinations, rather than three full island days. Start with the experiences you most want to fit into that window, then allow for the journeys from your accommodation and back.

May 26 and 27 returning through San Francisco

On May 26, we returned to Honolulu airport and flew back through SFO. San Francisco appears twice in the route: first as the two-night city stay, then as the connection on the way home.

We reached New York on May 27. The return crossed two calendar dates, so May 26 was not simply a final Oahu sightseeing day followed by a same-day arrival home.

What this itinerary shows

The route was New York to San Francisco to Honolulu, then back through San Francisco to New York. It paired a short city stop with a short island stay, while leaving a substantial part of the calendar window to travel.

If you are considering the same combination, compare the actual flight schedule, connection times and overnight allocation before booking. Decide whether the full days available in each destination match what you want to do there. Our dates show how we divided this particular trip; they do not establish today's flight availability or the right pace for another traveler.
